Home-based businesses face the same decisions as larger companies. This can be more challenging because as the owner you will have to focus on all aspects of the company and not just the areas you are comfortable with.
Most home based businesses have their own issues, with regard to publicity, capital raising, privacy dealings and the like, which have to be addressed for the business to run smoothly and efficiently in the black. While most of these issues become obsolete for an internet business, they still matter for a business that is dealing with products.
For example, if you want to make chocolates at home, from your kitchen, and then sell them locally and online, you have to consider the legal issues of this venture. Figure out where you stand in tax payments, business insurance, health-related matters, and so on and so forth. Other important details that need to be taken care of are packaging, marketing, sales, accounts; the same issues that a normal business has to deal with!
For a home based business that is dealing with self-made products, packaging and marketing together form the biggest challenge. Personalized packing takes more time, although it has more value to a customer. Many of us are tired of mass-produced candy bars, and would love to try out something different. There is a slot in the market for home-made personalized chocolate, and you can fill it, via increased production, personalized packaging and extra advertising.
Small businesses generally tend to make little or no money during the first year after start-up unless they are wildly popular. This is because the capital loans need to be paid off, economies of scale are not provided, the business is little known to the pool of would-be customers, payment of other bills, tax etc! If you’re prepared to stick out up to two years in the red, then you’re assured to a good turnaround, if you’re employing good business practices.
The most important issue that exists for a small business is publicity. Adverse publicity of your products can ruin your business, and good publicity can take it to the stars! If you’re cooking chocolate , make sure no little buggers get into it. Or you might just be facing a lawsuit!
