Free Versus Paid Advertising For Your Home Business?
By Rosco St Quintin

Way back in 2001, I was experiencing a steep learning curve in the relatively new world of Internet Marketing.

I decided to have a crack at “free” advertising in an attempt to build my “multiple” new business ventures with a zero level of expenditure. Why not; free sounds much more attractive than “paid”? And I could not wait to be able to earn an income from my home business internet efforts, & be independently wealthy! Plus I hate spending money if I don’t have to lose those hard earned dollars.

Yes, just like you, I was attempting to build a home business via the internet with near “zero” investment. Back in 2001 the internet was considerably simpler. A very, very different Internet to what we have today. By that I mean, we did not have the multitudes of millions of “wannabe richies” people roaming round the Internet that we have in 2007! The Internet had not become overcrowded…mind you…overcrowding is now proving a great incentive, if you know your “modern” internet marketing methods in detail?

What I wanted to achieve was to be able to earn an attractive income as a result of working from home. I joined numerous Internet “MLM” & “Affiliate” type companies over those early years. Most of these enterprises were in “pre-launch” & offering that solitary fact, as an assured platform to achieve internet wealth!

I followed the instructions I was given precisely…example : place “this” advert or “this” banner advert in “these free classified advertising sites” or this free “traffic exchange” & you will have new people signing up in your business by the hundreds!

For several months I followed that advice. I invested a lot of effort…& no money.. & an enormous amount of valuable time, placing my adverts in numerous “free classifieds”, free “ezine newsletters”; free traffic exchanges (& clicking endlessly to earn free advertising credits) & other “free” places that I now forget. The end result of all that effort was “zilch”…”nada”…”nix”!

After several months of abject frustration, the penny finally dropped; the upline people who were giving me this marketing advice did not have a clue what they were talking about. Probably; they were running “in-home” meetings in prospects homes similar to the old “Amway” meetings of the seventies! Been there & done that! White board & all! And I did not wish to revisit those agonies ever again.

After several months of abject failure and not recruiting more than a couple of downline; who did nix; I decided to invest a few dollars in “paid” advertising! The positive results were remarkable, even though the sites where I placed adverts in were low cost (as low as $2; in $2 ezine advert sites!)

Now; I have to admit that even though my “paid” advertising resulted in a healthy percentage of signups; unfortunately; very few of these signups resulted in any financial benefit to myself. Most gave up after a few weeks; never to be heard from again! I guess the problem was they did not want to invest money to make money; just like me several months earlier.

My message to you; the “wannabe Internet zillionaire”, is this! You would not attempt to establish a conventional “real time business” without the realization that you will have to make your presence known to your potential clientele (local news paper adverts; etc). You might have the greatest idea on the planet; however if you keep the idea at home; nothing will ever happen.

Now, maybe I missed the “freebie advert sites ” that do produce the goods…however I don’t think so! Free advertising sites did not work for me..maybe because it’s only “robots” that read them? What I mean by that is that lots of people buy a few hundred dollars of advertising credits on a “classified advert site”. The subsequent result is that very few humans ever actually visit such sites! From a couple of years of personal experience this message applies to Traffic Exchanges as well.

What I am saying is this. By all means look at freebie advertising as an alternative method of getting your message out there. However, before you do so, check out the advertising site and make sure that plenty of REAL humans do read those adverts!

The best source of ‘Free” advertising remains in the realm of constructing your own “web-blog-site”, regularly adding excellent & informative content to your sites that the world is seeking; establishing systems to add people to your mailing list; & monetizing your sites to the MAX!
